St Austell is set to host its highly anticipated Festival of Children’s Literature from June 28th to June 30th, 2024.
Following a successful inaugural event in 2023, this year’s festival promises to be bigger and better, taking over the town centre with a wealth of literary activities and events.
A Star-Studded Line-Up
This year’s festival features a stellar line-up of over 25 acclaimed children’s authors and illustrators, catering to young readers aged 0-16. Notable names include Hannah Gold, Rob Biddulph, Onjali Q. Rauf , Jenny McLachlan, Katie Kirby, Jasbinder Bilan, Tola Okogwu, Ed Vere, Sarah McIntyre, Philip Reeve, Clare Helen Welsh, Louie Stowell, Neill Cameron and many more. These talented storytellers will be hosting a range of engaging events designed to ignite a passion for reading among children.
Events for All Ages
For the youngest attendees, the festival offers magical storytelling sessions, interactive picture book readings, draw-alongs, a lively cat disco, and a variety of crafting workshops. These activities aim to create an exciting and immersive experience that encourages a love of books and reading.
Older children will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of literature. Authors will share the inspirations behind their books and the journey to becoming writers. There will be workshops where children can write and share their own stories, draw cartoons, and interact with their favourite authors. Graphic novel enthusiasts can look forward to a comic strip workshop led by Neill Cameron, and a panel discussion on nature writing and world-building.
Community and Accessibility
With an entry fee of just £1.00 per event, the festival is committed to ensuring accessibility for all. This nominal charge encourages widespread participation, allowing everyone to partake in the literary celebration. The festival aims to:
- Celebrate the positive impact of reading on children’s life outcomes
- Provide children with the opportunity to experience live author events
- Support families in choosing to read together
- Inspire a community that values reading for pleasure
Dedicated Schools Day
The festival kicks off with a dedicated Schools Day on Friday, June 28th, hosting events for over 2000 local students. This special day aims to bring the joy of reading to a larger audience of young learners, fostering a community of enthusiastic readers.
