A Cowes author has had her first book published – at the age of 95.
Sheila Keen has been writing amusing and uplifting poetry for the past 15 years. She started writing to make her husband laugh after he had a stroke and has continued ever since. She said: “It’s a great way to keep my brain active. I’ve had a few of my poems published in women’s magazines, but, earlier this year, I decided that what I really wanted was to have them published in a book, called Geriatric Nostalgia.
“I will donate £1 from the sale of each book to the Island’s RSPCA; it’s a charity close to my heart. After I retired, I helped open their new charity shop in Ventnor, and, since moving to Cowes, I make and sell greeting cards which I sell to friends and neighbours, with all the proceeds going to the RSPCA at Godshill.
“Although the book is called Geriatric Nostalgia, not all the poems are about old age; there are lots about nature, animals and just the quirky things in life – seeing my poems in print is a dream come true.”
The book is already selling well on Amazon and is also available to buy at Medina Bookshop, Cowes.
