In the European Union and around the world, ‘press freedom is the canary in the coal mine’ because it is a strong key indicator of democratic backsliding. More and more journalists are subject to physical attacks, online threats and harassment. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola will introduce this Book Talk entitled Protection of journalists in the European Union featuring Paul Caruana Galizia’s book ‘A Death in Malta, An assassination and a family’s quest for justice’. The book depicts the remarkable life and legacy of Daphne Caruana Galizia, a Maltese investigative journalist who was brutally murdered in 2017; explores the role of free media in modern societies and narrates the investigations into her shocking murder. After a speech by European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová, Paul Caruana Galizia will discuss his book with MEP Assita KANKO and MEP Ramona STRUGARIU. The discussion will be moderated by the Guardian journalist Juliette Garside.
